Devlog #1 - It's Hack 'n' Slashing Time

Hello fellow reader, welcome to our first devlog. We at Guys5 Productions are creating a game for our final year in college. It’s by far the biggest project we are working on and are very excited and quite ambitious to deliver the best game we can.

The game we’re creating is a hack and slash set in Victorian era, at the very start of the Industrial Revolution. As of right now we’re still exploring what core mechanics we’d like to implement in our game, which means we can’t share anything with you yet. Once we do settle on core mechanics, we’ll dedicate a devlog post about them. In the meantime, let’s meet the team behind the project

First off we have Luka, the project manager and lead developer. He is tasked to lead the production of the project as well as manage the programming of the game.

Next we have Dawid, the lead asset designer on the project who oversees the artistic direction and style of the game, as well as create game assets.

Up next we have Dorian, our lead game designer, lead test coordinator and assisting developer. His job is to design core mechanics of our game, coordinate internal playtesting and assist in programming.

Then we have Fran, the lead audio designer, assisting asset designer and assisting game designer. Fran’s duties include assisting Dorian with game design, assisting Dawid with creating assets and picking audio samples that best suit our game

And last but certainly not least we have James, our dedicated developer who will spend most of his time programming core aspects of the game.

Although we said we can’t share any details on core mechanics, we can show you some of the work we have so far.

Here we have the very first piece of concept art done by Dawid. When we proposed the idea of a hack and slash, he imagined the player character as a demon hunter who infiltrates a castle. We really liked the dark tone of the piece and decided to keep it for our game.

After more discussion, we decided to change the setting to Victorian era with a pinch of steampunk. Below is a mood board done by Fran that gives us a better idea of how the game would look like.

Robot enemies study

Weapons study

Environments Study

One last thing we’d like to share is this cool slash visual effect done by Luka. Even though we’re still very early in development, he simply could not resist making it. He even learned a bit of Blender to create a custom mesh and we at Guys5 Productions agree that is quite based.

That’s all for now. Thank you so much for taking your time to read this. Make sure to keep an eye out for our next devlog.

See ya!
